Last season Theatre New Brunswick introduced a new performance space to the province’s cultural landscape. Initially referred to as the TNB Studio Theatre, our first season in our new home included three productions (You Play Beautifully, Vigil & Watching Glory Die), a few readings and a very memorable live music performance by Fredericton musician Dillon Anthony.
Since last season, we have continued to develop the space adding very comfortable theatre seating, dressing rooms, upgraded washroom facilities and new signage to the exterior of the building – it’s like we’re building a home to invite guests!
We’ve named this new venue, the Open Space Theatre. Never heard of it? Well, here are five reasons to check us out this season.
#1 Our 98 seat theatre offers one of the most intimate theatre experiences in Atlantic Canada. Nowhere else can you get this up-close-and-personal with professional actors on stage. Experience theatre in a whole new way at the Open Space Theatre!
#2 Catch three world premiere productions by New Brunswick playwrights including work by Thomas Morgan Jones, Ryan Griffith and Shawn Wright.
#3 Our season begins with A Sunday Affair, our very first co-production with NB’s Théâtre populaire d’Acadie. This historic partnership will see the play presented in both official languages as it tours throughout the province and it all begins at the Open Space Theatre this October.
#4 Shawn Wright will make his playwriting debut as part of our 2016-2017 season. Wright is a veteran of the Canadian stage, born and raised in Saint John, New Brunswick. We’re very honoured that he has chosen to share his very first play with us and we can’t wait for you to see it. Don’t miss Ghost Light, November 17-27.
#5 This season also includes our first Performance Series. Between January and April 2017 we’ll welcome some amazing musical talent into our theatre and will play host to a special performance by Saint John’s Connection Dance Works.
